Janie's Pound Cakes Founder
Chocolate Pound Cakes, Homemade Pound Cakes, Specialty Pound Cakes, Butter, Lemon, Cinnamon, Berries
Janie’s Cakes makes the Finest Pound Cakes in the World. We can make that claim because of our founder and inspiration, Janie Clapp.
Janie is a cheerful breath of fresh air, a stickler for detail, and a pound cake perfectionist. You’ll meet her when you come visit us. And by the way, Janie's bright smile and warm heart are baked into every pound cake!
Like other people who bake for a living, Janie learned her craft from a family member. Her great-grandmother, whom she called “Papu,” passed down years of recipes and baking techniques to her great-granddaughter. As she grew up, Janie knew that she would make her career in baking.
Celebrating 20 years! - After honing her skills at the Culinary Institute of America in White Plains, New York, Janie opened Janie’s Cakes in January of 1987. The company has been continuously baking and shipping cakes for over 20 years at its location in Tyler, Texas.
Known locally as "the little white house with the blue roof," Janie's Cakes headquarters (illustrated at left) houses production, shipping, administrative and retail operations. Although the historic building looks like a house, it was originally built in 1934 for the Arp Nursery Co. to grow, process and sell roses, for which Tyler, Texas is internationally renowned.
Janie lives on a working Texas cattle ranch, The Rockin' C Ranch (www.rockincranch.org). Her cattle rancher husband, Matt, also runs a summer camp for kids, hosting, housing and feeding over 1000 ranch hand campers every summer.
The ranch has over fifty horses, seven dogs, three-hundred cows, five goats, three pigs and three hundred chickens (which provide the eggs for her cakes!). Janie and Matt have two grown children and one grandchild.
Making a difference - A statement from Janie
"I feel strongly about charitable giving on a personal level, but I also believe that small business and corporations have a responsibility to support the communities that make them successful. That’s why Janie’s Cakes actively supports the efforts of
The Rockin’ C Ranch, a Christian summer camp for kids located on a working Texas cattle ranch, and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, an organization committed to finding a cure to the deadly scourge of breast cancer. Each year Janie’s Cakes donates cakes, dollars and time to raise money for the Rockin’ C Ranch scholarship fund needed to help send kids to camp that would not otherwise be able to afford the cost. The Rockin’ C provides financial assistance to overhalf of its campers. Without this support many of these kids would miss out on one of life’sgreatest childhood pleasures, summer camp. For more information see www.rockincranch.org.
The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure takes place in many communities across the country. Janie’s Cakes participates in our local Tyler, Texas race by providing cakes and gift certificates to breast cancer survivors who are honored at the event. For more information see cms.komen.org/komen/index.htm.
I urge everyone reading this to get your own companies involved in community charities. Individual participation is important, but corporate participation, like compound interest, maximizes the results."
